Lovely Dress of the Day

Sometimes, in life, it pays for a lovely to be coy. When she is flirting with the handsome museum docent. When she is being praised and lauded and praised for her wonderful work in the office. And there must be some other moments..but this moment is not one of them. Hello, Fabulous Farrago Dress, I love you! That's right, I said it-- I. Love. You.I love you for your puffed sleeves. For your black jersey bodice. For your leotard-esque neckline. For your elastic waist. And for your patchwork skirt. Oh my, that patchwork skirt.

I want to wear this dress with my hair swept up in a messy ballet bun. With gold flats. And gold bracelets. I love this dress. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be coy.

Something funny happened when Autumn came around this year: I became weirdly obsessed with crocheting. For those of you who don't know what crocheting is, our little friend Wikipedia explains it very clearly, for it "is a process of creating fabric from yarn or thread using a crochet hook. The word is derived from the Middle French word croc or croche, meaning hook. Crocheting, similar to knitting, consists of pulling loops of yarn through other loops. Crochet differs from knitting in that only one loop is active at one time and that a crochet hook is used instead of knitting needles." I guess it must be a pretty unknown craft because I'm teaching a class on how to crochet a scarf this week and the headline said, "Learn how to 'crochet'!" However, the art of crocheting isn't unknown on our favorite craft website, Etsy. On Etsy you can search for thousands upon thousands of crocheted items, from jewelry to scarves to housewares.

While searching today for some crochet-spiration, I came across these truly lovely Victorian Crochet Lace Cuffs from Modern Needlepoint. They are gorgeous ivory cuffs, made with a button, which hark back to a time of bustled crinoline skirts, elaborate hats, puffy sleeves, and cameo necklaces. These can be made in a variety of colors, and I think they would look beautiful with a wedding dress (imagine the bride getting ivory, and the bridesmaids getting colors to match their dresses!). These are so delicate and feminine, yet so well made that they look tough and strong. They are to be worn low on the hand so that they can stick out from under long sleeves. I love the lace pattern; and the utter simplicity and beauty of these make them wearable for all four seasons, whether with a light summer coat, your heavy winter woolen shirts, spring dresses, or plaid for the Fall. What a great way to utilize the art of crocheting!

PS. Check out Modern Needlepoint's other work, like this beyond gorgeous crocheted necklace!

Lovely on Long Island

Every once in a while a lovely needs a night out. Sometimes she needs appetizers, entrèes (an entrèe, not a main course, mon chère), dessert, and high heels. And sometimes when she needs that she has no more than $25 in her fantastic clutch, delicious dress pocket or seriously over sized big-enough-for-carrying-cash silver locket. It is at precisely this intersection that restaurant week becomes a lovely gal's best friend.

Don't fret my Long Island Lovelies, Huntington restaurant week is just around the corner! October 12th-23rd a ton of great Huntington joints will be offering a three course prix-fixe for just $24.95, admittedly, before tax and tip, but scrounge around for change in your car, purse, pockets, etc. Restaurants include: Tutto Pazzo, Honu, Piccolo, Prime and Mac's, just to name a few of my favorites and still-need-to-try's (read the rest of the list here).

For my Manhattan lovelies, you'll have to wait for January for restaurant week, where lunch deals run you $25, and dinners $35. And for my loyal LA lovelies, you're in luck-- LA restaurant week has practically sneaked up on us! It starts Sunday, October 4th, ending the 9th and picking back up again from the 11th until the 16th. Lucky LA lovelies can enjoy the friendlier prices of $16-$28 for lunch, and $26-$44 for dinner at over 200 LA restaurants.

So, my dearests, find a comfortable dress, a great pair of heels and maybe even a dining buddy before the hardest decision is made-- which of the fabulous restaurants will you chose? Hm?

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

This weekend, following instructions by my grandmother, I made a giant, delicious meal consisting of brisket, soup, and baby carrots, among other delicious Autumn foods. As I was cooking I realized that a) I don't cook enough, and b) I need to start learning new recipes because I want a plethora of go-to-meals to cook on crazy school nights when I can't think of anything new. I love looking up recipes, writing down recipes on cards, and collecting recipes from my loved ones, but often times I'm stuck with a drawer full of disorganized recipes and when it comes time to really cook something, I can never find the recipe I want. This is why, when I came upon the Primitive Mustard Yellow Recipe Box from Creek Side Crafting, I knew it would be perfect for my kitchen. I love the country style of the box; it is a very non-obtrusive style which would look great in any country kitchen without detracting from the subtle style of the kitchen. This is a wooden recipe box, with the phrase, "Olde Time Recipes" written on the top. I love that it is homemade and every box is one-of-a-kind, almost like it was made just for your kitchen! I adore the sweet checkerboard and the stars add a very Americana look to the box. I would love to use this as my recipe box and collect all my most loved recipes in it; what a great family heirloom to pass down to your children and grandchildren!

Lovely Gift Idea!

Inspired by Natalie's moping over longed for and forgotten caramel apples on IowasThinking, I present you, my lovely readers, with the Caramel Apple Dipping Kit courtesy of the Vermont Country Store. What a fantastic gift idea, for just $20 send someone everything they need (except the apples! Why not decorate a pretty envelope with a five dollar bill in it for apple money?)-- the kit includes: "enough highly-adhering caramel, chopped peanuts, toffee, sprinkles, and wooden skewers to make 8 apples." It's a lovely fall birthday gift, a house warming gift, an autumn present, or a little surprise to say "I'm sorry you forgot to go back and buy the delicious looking caramel apples, Natalie." I can only imagine what some of my lovely fall birthday-ed friends would do with such a kit, I know some truly lovely artists and cooks who could turn an apple and some caramel into a masterpiece inside and outside of the tummy.

Lovely Dress of the Day

Flit about in this Firefly Wrap Dress from Modcloth, like a lovely little flame and let the boys flock to you like moths. There are a lot of flying creature analogies in the last sentence. Don't let it throw you, just go with it. If you just don't think too much about it

The wrap style is flattering to pretty much all body types, and the dainty material is so perfectly appropriate for the "Firefly Dress." Which incidentally makes me sing Rhett Miller's "Fireflies" over and over in my head, since yesterday when I found the dress. The dress speaks to the fickleness of youth, young love and big decisions that the song refers to. Honestly, the dress should have been used in the video, in which he is accompanied by Rachael Yamagata.

You decide, lovelies

Lovely Dress of the Day

Lovely Monday, Lovelies! For many of my Lovelies this Monday is a special holiday-- I don't just mean not being at school, work, etc, but the actual holiday Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. This dress, the Femme en Noir Dress from Modcloth is not only a seriously sweet number, but has the perfect somberness for the day of atonement. For the more conservative dinners pair the dress with a leotard underneath, a pair of black tights and boots, it will remain seriously chic and adorably appropriate. Obviously it works as a fantastic fall frock as well, jean or leather jacket, flats and a luscious leather bag. Such a delicious look for delicious fast breaking, fall pie eating, and apple cider sipping. (Do you guys realize my life revolves around food and dresses? Man, I need a hobby.)

Lovely Weekend, Lovelies!

I apologize for being an errant blogger this week. This weekend is just as wacky and so I leave you with the best recipe I've encountered in a long, long time. I made it for my step father's birthday this weekend. And it was a hit, a huge hit. I dare you to make it this weekend, and not consume the entire thing in one sitting. I'm actively resisting left overs as we speak.

It's a lovely, lower calorie cheesecake-- and for eases sake I made it in a graham cracker pie crust, instead of making my own. Everyone loves pie. Pie is a lovely dessert.

Ingredients
Crust:
1 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/4 cup SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated
3 tablespoons butter, melted

Filling:
2 (8 ounce) packages regular cream cheese

1 (8 ounce) package fat-free cream cheese
1 1/4 cups SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated
4 eggs
1 1/2 tablespoons lime juice (I used vanilla instead)
1 pinch salt
Directions
1Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
2Combine graham cracker crumbs, SPLENDA® Granulated Sweetener and melted butter in a small bowl. Press on bottom and up sides of prepared pan.
3Bake 10 minutes. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.
4Beat regular and fat free cream cheese together at high speed with a mixer until creamy; gradually add SPLENDA® Granulated Sweetener, mixing well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating just until each one is incorporated. Add lime juice and a pinch of salt, beat until smooth. Pour into prepared crust.
5Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until mixture is almost set, and slightly firm to the touch. Run a knife around edge of pan to release sides, and help prevent cracking. Cool to room temperature on a wire rack; cover and chill at least 8 hours.

The recipe is from splenda.com.

Enjoy the recipe, enjoy the first fall weekend and enjoy yourselves, lovelies!

Lovely For Autumn Find

Lovelies, I know it's usually Jenny who does the Lovely Dress of the Day, but we sometimes have different styles, and therefore, I'm simply just sharing this amazing find with you and not labeling it "The Dress of the Day." Sometimes, in between grading papers, making up quizzes, and writing homework on the board, my mind starts to wander. Today it wandered over to J. Peterman; I happened to get an email from them about their gorgeous one-0f-a-kind pieces that they sell, but as always, my cursor made it's way over to the dress section. J. Peterman makes and sells a dress called "The 1947 Dress." I've always been a little too nervous to buy and try it (it's a tad out of my price range), but there is something so feminine, yet powerful, about the dress that always intrigued me. Usually the dress comes in solid colors, you know, the usual blacks, browns, and reds, but today, I came across something magnificent.

I happen to be going to Vermont in a few weeks and I was just lying in bed last night thinking, "I know one wears hiking clothes, puffy vests, and comfortable jeans while in Vermont...but what about dresses? What's an appropriate dress for traveling through Vermont?" Well, my Lovelies, apparently manifesting thoughts of perfect dresses does work because J. Peterman answered my dreams and decided to print The 1947 Dress in a gorgeous red and black plaid. How perfect would this dress be for late nights walks along the woods, or drinking hot cider while browsing antique shops, or picking out new boots at the local boot shop (god, I hope there is a local boot shop), or buying local fruit at the farm stand? This lovely dress has real pearl buttons, three quarter length sleeves (as not to damage your sleeves while making apple sauce, candles, or gardening) and with it's wide sweep and feminine neckline it is sure to look amazing on any woman, whether in Vermont, New York, or Minnesota.

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

I love when our Lovely Readers hook us up with amazing stores to check out; one of our devoted readers, and the daughter of Someday Designs owner was the little birdie who told me to check out JJEvensen Art. Boy, was I blown away, not only by their one-of-a-kind items, but by their effort to use reclaimed items and stay very green. I love when people use their imagination to create items that are totally unique from other items, which may not have ever been used in those possible ways. I fell in love with the hooks made from reclaimed utensils, especially the Artsy Red Cedar Silverware Hook. This adorable and lovely hook panel would look perfect in a front hall, kitchen, pantry, or art studio. I love it's subtle color and folk-art look; it's made from "Three tablespoons, 1 fork and one fork handle were bent with a special technique to give you an upcycled coatrack! Can be used for coats, backpacks, pots n' pans, towels, hats, keys, etc..The solid Red cedar coat rack measures 24 inches X 6 inches . There are two predrilled holes for easy mounting."

What's even lovelier? How about making money while shopping at JJEvensen? Check it out: "For the the month of September we will be having a super special sterling sale with free shipping for all sterling silver items. We will also be giving out a free $5.00 item to every purchase over $50.00 as a special thank you to or customers!"

Start your holiday shopping now and stock up on these lovely one-0f-a-kind finds which would be perfect for everyone in your life from your best friend, to your grandpa, to your favorite professor. Make money, go green, and stay stylish!

Lovely Dress of the Day

Do you lovelies remember when I coined the term Tea Party Appropriate? That was a good day. This dress, the Everything's Bou-quet Dress, from Modcloth fits my new term and makes me happy. Today is a good day too.
I really, really want to throw a tea party brunch and think this dress would be a perfect hostess number. Long enough to pair with an apron. Patterned enough to prepare food in and not worry too much about some tiny little spot. And fun enough to drink champagne, eat cupcakes and greet guests in. What do you lovelies think? Is there a Lovely At Your Side Sunday Jazz Brunch in order?

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

Happy Monday, Lovelies! I love signs. I love all signs, whether the kind from the unknown which we must decipher the real meaning of, or the simple wooden sign which dictates which room is which in a house, or the beautiful signs which state lovely sayings and can be hung on the wall to spruce up a room. Signs always get my head spinning and thinking; technically, a sign is the simplest form of art: a piece of wood with some lettering on it, so why am I so moved by signs? I happen to collect signs. Someday in my (future) house, I want a whole wall of signs detailing all the adventures and places I've been in my life. Signs point the direction of where you have been, where you are, and where you will be going, whether you know it at the time or not.

I love signs that are ironic; they look beautiful and elegant, but their message makes the reader laugh out loud (while in Williamsburg, VA a sign was bought that said, "Dance like no one is watching; we could all use a good laugh." It made me laugh so hard that I had to buy it!). Curved Noodles, an original sign shop, sells a sign which made me smile wide and let out a good giggle; the sign says, "Remember, as far as anyone knows, we're a nice normal family." Wouldn't this be a perfect sign to put in the front hall, kitchen, or foyer of a house? Any guest that enters the house would see it and inevitably smile and laugh. What a great way to greet your house guests!

However, sometimes you crave a little more elegance for your house and something so ironic wouldn't necessarily jive with the rest of the house. In this case, I love the signs from Family Attic. I fell in love with their "Rose Cottage" sign (my grandmother's house is named "Rose Cottage"! What a perfect Mother's Day gift!). I adore the antiqued look of it, yet, it's handmade and one-of-a-kind. I feel like you would have seen this sign in an old cottage, high on a hill, wildflowers abounding, scents of fresh bread and chicken broth steaming from the windows...now you can make your little dorm room, apartment, or house feel like a sweet cottage with this truly lovely sign. If your house doesn't have a name, you can just put up the "Country Cottage" sign and let everyone know that they are entering a much-loved little cottage.

What would your ideal sign say?

Lovely Dress of the Day

I spent the better half of the morning looking for inspiration-- I jumped from Louise Brooks to Claudette Colbert to Ingrid Bergman. Nothing was working. Finally, I turned to Etsy, which lead me right in the right direction. To the Floral Sweetheart Cocktail Party Dress from Make Me a Dress, which went perfectly with my current inspiration for life, fashion and the pursuit of happiness: these shoes. The "Destiny," has anything ever been truer-ever? No. Yes, they are Paris Hilton shoes. Yes, I am ashamed. Yes, I do absolutely need them. A suede peep toe pump with a satin bow? And where I saw them (at Marshall's) they were $39, not closing in on $100. So this dress is not only entirely lovely, but it would give me a purpose to own the shoes, wear the shoes, love the shoes. But back to the dress. The sweetheart strapless look is one of my personal favorites, additionally the bodice looks well fitted, which promises the dress won't slip and serve as a distraction from the skirt of the dress (hello gorgeous vintage fabric) and your gorgeous heels. I love the contrast of the sleek black bodice against the flowery, full skirt-- it creates drama and interest. Wear it to a wedding, cocktail event or party of any sort (what a fantastic birthday dress!) and stand out, stand tall and enjoy your one of a kind dressFor more information, pictures and to buy the Floral Sweetheart Dress, click here.

Lovely Weekend, Lovelies!

Happy Friday, beauties! Today Olivia and I are doing something we never imagined... saying goodbye to our baby brother, kissing him, hugging him and sending him off to Scotland for university. It will be strange to change our three sibling attack to a two person defensive, but we couldn't be more excited for the tall red headed young man who claims to be our baby brother. This weekend is sure to be full of tears, excitement and hopefully many different forms of comfort food (brownies for us, haggis for him!) In the meantime, enjoy the weekend with some of my favorite things of the moment!

  • The great home decoration done by the Lovely Natalie in her new home in Iowa, as well as her wonderful blog, IowasThinking, which makes me want to move to the Midwest, get a great house like hers and just be flawlessly fabulous (which Natalie has been as long as I've known her).

Lovely Dress of the Day

I'm not sure if you all can tell, but today is all about trips, baby brother and Scotland. So today's dress of the day comes to us from the highlands--a plaid number.

Do any of you lovelies remember the episode of Sex and the City where Charlotte and Trey were fighting, and still had to go to the Scottish event and Trey did the highland fling and Charlotte wore a beautiful tartan gown and had all those shots in her thigh for the in vitro? Anyone else remember that episode?

Well when I was 15 or 16 I was getting a dress for someone's sweet sixteen and I tried on this tartan gown with a black silk top and a collar, I loved, loved, loved it. Olivia tried to tell me it didn't work and finally came out with "You're NOT Charlotte York, Jen!" And since then I've been trying to prove that in some ways I am Charlotte York, and by "some ways" I mean I need to prove I can pull off a tartan fancy dress. The Plaid Skirted Dress from Forever21 might be my in, and for the sale price of $15.99 I can afford to fail. But I won't.

Bon Voyage Loveliness

Today Olivia and I will be giving out little brother our best collegiate advice, putting his bags in the car and waving goodbye as our parents drive him away and toward the airport. This exciting, and yet so traumatic, event got me thinking about flying and the perfect transit gift. I've compiled my list of travel essentials, but I hope if any of you, my lovely readers, have any suggestions you will let me know-- I always love new ideas.
  • eye mask, for napping and arriving amazingly refreshed.
  • hand sanitizer, because when walking through an airport and being on a plane one touches about 500 things they wish they didn't have to.
  • an overtly intellectual and intimidating book which can be pulled out in case of the emergency that the person next to you attempts conversation and you are not interested.
  • socks, to keep your feet toasty and clean on the plane.
  • Evian Water Spray, to rehydrate your face and skin as flying zaps the water right out of you.
  • moisturizer for hands, because between the plane and the hand sanitizer your hands might get very, very dry.
  • a wrap or wrap sweater, or big scarf of some sort, to throw around your shoulders, use as a blanket, put over the pillow, or even your head.
  • The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Country Living Magazine, Martha Stewart Magazine, Wired, etc.
  • a decorated brown lunch bag, which can stand by the traveler's feet and serve as a garbage, I always accumulate garbage during a flight and hate having to wait for the stewardess to come around with her garbage bag, this is the perfect fun solution.
  • yummy gum for take offs and landings!
  • And last, but not least, a personalized note, trinket or drawing from you--something to make them smile, but not something so sentimental as to make them cry. A little, funny drawing, a tiny toy (a top, a ball, a little toy animal) or a charm of some sort. Have fun with this item, go creative, enjoy figuring it out!

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

There's nothing lovelier than taking care of the world around us, which is why today's Lovely Etsy Find of the Day isn't just a great gift idea, but a novel approach to help save the world we live in. Little Sapling Toys creates simple, gorgeous, and classic wooden toys and games for young children. They work mostly with organic materials, even their wood finish is made from a "local beeswax and organic jojoba oil finish." I honestly don't see why people wouldn't only buy their children toys from here! Why would you want your precious baby to be using teething rings made of vinyl and plastic when they could be teething on natural products which don't have chemicals in them!? I absolutely adore this set, "Organic World Building" blocks which can be used alone or as an addition to other building blocks. I love the irony in the blocks; they are natural wooden toys for children shaped like some of the most intricate and manufactured edifices in the world.

The best part of Little Sapling Toys is that for every purchase made, they plant a tree through Trees for the Future! So, while you are aiding your child in having the healthiest life possible, Little Sapling Toys is taking care of the rest and making sure that your healthy little ball of love will grow up in a strong environment, full of giant trees to read, play music, picnic, and fall in love underneath. I wish more stores lile this existed; they are giving back to the community at large, and that's the loveliest thing anyone can do.

Lovely Dress of the Day

How many, many times have we heard about the Little Black Dress, or the LBD. Dresses made a come back about four years ago, and with it the LBD was everywhere. A lovely still can't open a copy of Glamour, Oprah, or Teen Vogue without being offered a bevy of LBDs, from classic cuts to flirty and funky frocks. But I doubt any dress could get closer to the classic Holly Golightly look for such a recession friendly price than the "Sleeveless Black Dress" from Forever21.The dress runs $22.80. That's right, $22.80 for a wardrobe, game changing dress-- this dress could honestly and literally change your life, lovelies. This dress can be worn countless different ways. Dress it fun and fall with my autumn essentials of cowboy boots and a jean jacket, and pair the look with some funky, clunky gold earrings.

Or dress it up with nude heels, stud earrings and a statement necklace--you could do anything with this dress, from big and chunky to a subtle gold fringe. A lovely could make over this dress daily by changing the necklace, and the stark black offers such a generous background to display the works of art dangling from your neck upon.

1. Flamenco Beaded Necklace, 2. Looped Fringe Necklace, 3. Daisette Rhinestone Necklace, 4. Paddle Trim Necklace.

Or, pair the dress with black tights and a pair of black pumps and refer to yourself as Holly Golightly all day, referencing super rats and mean reds. Throw a scarf around your neck to look super chic, and French, and of course cover those pretty eyes with some some sunglasses and float around like you're a lovely without a care in the world.

Lovely Dress of the Day

Well, I must be magic or something, because I was just thinking this dress would be perfect for the Long Island Fall Festival a friend of my recently reminded me of and then I received a letter from the Town of Huntington with the details of the festival as well as the website. The festival falls on Columbus day weekend, October 9-12, includes a meatball eating contest and will have more than 300 different vendors. You can bet I'll be there, feet in cowboy boots, arms in jean jacket and, hopefully, the rest of me in this adorable summer to fall number, the Abstracted Asters Dress from Anthropologie.
The pattern makes me crave that small space between watermelon and apple pie- summer-fall. When you layer for the morning, but by noon you've shed two layers and require an iced coffee to get you through the afternoon. Good thing the dress has pockets so you can ditch your purse in the car, and tote around your cardigan and jean jacket and still have a hand for iced tea and a hot dog. Carnival rides, music, independent sellers and most importantly food make for a great weekend festival, so maybe we'll see you there. How about it, Lovelies?

Lovely Dress of the Day

Hi all, I'm stealing the thunder today on Jenny's usual Lovely Dress of the Day. You ever have one of those moments where you have to find an outfit for something and you're thinking about it in your head, you go to your favorite website and it's like your dream outfit manifested itself right before your eyes? That's exactly what happened to me today while browsing ModCloth. I was really just looking for school clothes that were versatile and non-seasonal, but somehow (shocker) I ended up in the dress section and came upon something wonderful: The Bluegrass Festival Dress! I have some festivals coming up in the future which I'm looking forward to actually going to and this dress would be a perfect addition to my travels. As the website says, I'm all ready to "Kick [my] heels into the ground and throw [my] head to the sky as [I] dance to the lively tinker of bluegrass in this pretty plaid dress." Why do I think this is a perfect Bluegrass Festival dress? Okay, I know it's not the most feminine, form fitting dress, but lovelies, you're at a Bluegrass Festival! This isn't the time to worry about form and figure, this is the time to kick around in cowgirl boots, throw those wild curls in some loose braids, roll those 3/4 length sleeves up and if you aren't strumming on your own guitar, than you're shaking a tambourine and singing along with the music under the stars. Bluegrass festivals go all night long, so this dress is perfect for curling up and listening to music, slowly falling asleep on a flannel blanket while the banjos twinkle, the dobros hum, and the cowboys whistle. This dress would be perfect with your boots, or barefoot, or even with adorable black flats; the pockets in the dress are the perfect size for holding your picks, harmonicas, or that rare wildflower you find hidden under your guitar case.

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

I love my friends. I don't love when it's their birthday and I'm not close by enough to celebrate with them. This is why, when I saw the Lemon Poppy Seed Jumbo Vegan Cupcakes with Buttercream on Etsy today I knew it would be the perfect resolution to being far away from the friends on their special days. How does this help their celebration, you may wonder? Well, The Cupcake Mint has a genius idea and I think that any flavored cupcake from their store would make a perfect in-the-mail-surprise-birthday-treat! The Cupcake Mint is a totally one-of-a-kind store; first of all, all their recipes and treats are Vegan (making this a perfect little gift-treat for your vegan lovelies!); second of all, when they ship your treats, they don't ship them with the icing and decorations on them. At first glance, when I saw this, I was sort of bummed. The idea of getting a plain cupcake in the mail was sort of sad to me; however, when I saw their reason why: "Due to the nature of shipping these cakes will be shipped with the icing on the side for you or your recipient to decorate with themselves...Our cupcake experience is interactive & there is lots of room for creativity!" I knew that they were onto something brilliant.

Let's say you live far away from your favorite girl from college. It's her twenty-something birthday and she's in a distant city. You can send her this set of four cupcakes, she will get it in the mail, and she can use all the ingredients it comes with (icing and decorations) to not just simply eat the cupcake, but to make a memory in decorating the cupcake as well. Perhaps she can call you, and on speakerphone, or Skype, the two of you can relive college memories while she decorates her cupcake. What a lovely idea! These cupcakes aren't just an edible present, but a gift that truly says, "I'm thinking about you and I want you to take a moment, stop, and enjoy the icing!"

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

Happy Monday, Lovelies! Is it me or does it seem like everyone and their girlfriend is having a baby this month? In just this last week I've heard of three babies being born (what was going on nine months ago?!). With this baby explosion in mind, today's Etsy Find of the Day is dedicated to finding a great present for all these new babies. Presents for new babies can be difficult to obtain because some parents can be picky about what comes into the house, babies change sizes practically by the day, and you want to get them something original, something that the baby will wear/use and the parents will think of your relationship with the babe. As I was looking through pictures of a new baby on Facebook (yes, on Facebook) I couldn't help but oooh and awe at the pictures of the baby in a teeny-tiny hat. For babies, hats aren't just a fashion trend, but a necessary item; hats keep babies' little heads warm, keeping their temperature healthy and strong. But, as the amazing Dorothy Parker said, "Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves," therefore, why not dress the baby in style, all the while keeping them cozy?

After scouring for "baby hats" on Etsy for probably way too long today, I came across Belle Baby, a truly lovely baby hat and clothing shop which features the most adorable of items. The hat that I fell in love with for a new baby girl is the Baby Girl Crochet Beanie Hat With Bow. It's feminine, pink, and totally and utterly sums up the word "cute." I adore the little bow; I think it adds some true flapper style to the hat! This is a perfect present for a little girl who's mommy and daddy think she's a little princess; no one will every mistake your bald baby for a little boy in this sweet little hat!

The hat that I loved for all the new little boy babies born recently is the Baby Boy Crochet Beanie Hat in Brown/Tan/Green. This preppy little cap will look handsome on your little man and cause quite the stir on the playground. The green, tan, and brown tones are sure to bring out the color in any baby boy's eyes, causing them to sparkle in ways you never knew possible.

What's your go to gift for the new babies in your life?

Lovely Dress of the Day

I recently was thinking that I'd love to be taken somewhere heel worthy-- yes, taken. Sometimes it's fun to take yourself somewhere nice, and sometimes it's nice to be taken.

I'd like to go out with one of my fabulous girlie friends to the Russian Tea Room, Le Cirque, or , for vodka-pineapples, appetizers, and some focusing on feeling seriously glamourous. And the "Shine of the Time Dress" from Mod Cloth screams, screams my lovelies, glamour!

I love the ivory color of it, which you can totally get away with after labor day, winter white babies, winter white! I love the perfect little belt, which takes this fancy dress and makes it a fairly fancy dress which can be worn anywhere. Rock this baby anywhere from a classy, old restaurant with lots of professional waiters, and a menu older than me with lady like tights, pretty black suede pumps, and a simple parted ponytail, to the rooftop of the Rivington for trendy cocktails in a pair of heels that excite the senses (jewels, jems, animal print and peep toes!), fantastic rings, and a sex kitten bouffant. It's a versatile dress, a true beauty and under $70. What's more glam than that, my lovelies?

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

I love the holiday season; I love singing songs, buying presents, going to see the tree in Rockefeller Center. I love it all. I especially love Christmas stockings. There's something so sweetly reminiscent of running down the stairs on Christmas morning, and like a good appetizer to a meal, we always ran to the overstuffed stockings first. Stockings set the tone for the holidays; in olden times, if a child was naughty, their stocking was filled with coal, and thus they had a grumpy Christmas morning...but if a child was a good egg, they would get a stocking filled with oranges. The sweet fruit would set the cheerful tone to the whole holiday, the whole year, and thus, their whole life, pretty much. Ha. So, when I saw this gorgeous Christmas stocking from Mo Jackson, I knew I had to share it with you. This beautiful vintage quilt 'n chenille stocking is made from an old quilt, topped with vintage chenille and topped, like a cherry on a sundae, with a satin rose. I absolutely love the loveliness that this stocking entails. It's feminine, but not girly; it's Christmas-y, but not over the top. I think the color and size are perfect for an adult Christmas stocking; this would be a great present for a holiday-lover. It's hardly a simple Christmas stocking, it's more like a lovely piece of art that could easily be hung on the mantle all year long!

Lovely Weekend, Lovelies!

Happy Friday, my beautiful readers! Olivia is filling her weekend with apple picking and pie baking, and I plan on visiting some museums and kicking around in cowboy boots-- what more could we ask for? Let's hope for many pictures of apples, Olivia in an orchard, and pies, pies, pies. Enjoy some things I'm loving as we usher in the weekend!
  • Bakerella's mini pancake muffins, I think I might just try this recipe this weekend, what an easy way to whip up a batch of pancakes and not be stuck in front of the stove! Host a brunch and enjoy your company, what a gift.
  • J Peterman's French Frock Coat, on sale from $189 down to $62--a steal price for a coat, and for J Peterman? Amazing. Plus, there's nothing that makes winter more glamorous or romantic than a white overcoat.

Lovely Dress of the Day, Wedding Edition.

I've been thinking about my cousin Katie recently and the fantastic dress I know she will wear for her wedding. She is a costume designer and does nothing small or un-fabulous. For my own interest I wandered over to JCrew to check out their reasonably priced wedding gowns-- you can get a gown from them for $300, but a work dress is $250, this strikes me as odd. Katie has a lovely shape, she's a belly dancer and tall, tall, tall, so I picked some numbers I though would highlight her shape, pieces that don't distract and let her body do the speaking instead of the dress.

Lovely Cookie Recipe

I've been baking up a cookie storm recently, mostly just working with what I've got around the house. Today my grandmomma provided left over chips, coconut and oatmeal and so I did what I could in a sort of kitchen sink cookie. Everything but cookie. Whichever.

  • 1 cup plus 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups Quaker® Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • 1 cup coconut flakes

Heat oven to 350°F. In large bowl, beat butter and sugars on medium speed of electric mixer until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Add combined flour, baking soda; mix well. Add oats, chips and coconut; mix well.

Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheets covered in parchment.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets; remove to wire rack. Cool completely. Store tightly covered.

When teaching, the clock becomes your best friend. As with cooking, every single second counts in the classroom. You have to get every word in edgewise until the last second that the clock strikes and it's time to go. I love clocks; I love that they have faces and distinct personalities; I love that they can be modern, classic, lovely, or a mix of all styles. We need clocks; humans crave the acknowledgment of time and wax poetic on the passing of time. And, with teaching or cooking, a clock face has to be big enough to catch a quick glimpse of from across the room. This is why I adore the lovely style of the Antique Style Tuscan Roman wall clock from S.W. Clock Company. Each clock of theirs is handpainted, styled, and made to look antique. The clock is wooden and detailed to look like it is framed; I love the subtle tones of the gold and black. This clock is 30 inches, works with one double-A battery and is able to be hung on just one nail. Sounds lovely and perfect for any room in a house, school, place of worship, barn, shop, or even greenhouse. S.W. Clock Company "is known for their superior craftsmanship in making truly unique and one of a kind wall clocks. Each clock is hand crafted and intricately detailed, as it goes through a series of aging treatments, to achieve a one-of-kind antique work of art that is unique as the person it is intended for. Incomparable in workmanship and quality, S. W. Clock Company assures perfection. That quality is reflected both in the wall clocks they create, and in the people whose artistic talents they rely on to hand craft them. S. W. Clock Company’s timepieces inspire antique elegance while accentuating today’s home décor." What a lovely way to tell the time all the while remaining a beautiful piece of art, ready to be hung on any wall!

Lovely Dress of the Day

While I know Olivia is going apple picking, a not taking me, cough cough, and not berry picking, I still want to buy her Mod Cloth's adorable Berry Basket Dress for her adventure, which I'm not invited on, this weekend. Olivia would look so sweet in this with her jean jacket, and as she walked and walked and picked and picked, the strapless dress would be a great advantage. She'd keep her cool in the orchard all day. She could wear the dress to a post picking lunch, as I imagine apple picking makes you very hungry, I have to imagine because I'm not invited.

She could then wear that pretty pattern to start in on a number of apple recipes, I for one am pushing for all American Apple Pie. I'll accept that as an apology for leaving me out of apple picking.

A Lovely Autumn Recipe

It's that time of year again: apple cider season. I adore apple juice and cider. It's by far my favorite drink in this world. I (obviously) love apples; I guess this makes sense because I'm a teacher? Either way, I'm overjoyed that this weekend I'm going apple picking! What a great way to kick off Autumn's arrival (I had to wear a jean jacket this weekend!). However, I realized that after said apple picking, I will have tons of apples and need something amazing to do with them. After the overindulgence of food in Colonial Williamsburg, I decided I needed a recipe for apples which was lovely, delicious, but also semi-healthy. I searched Gourmet Magazine until I found this recipe for Baked Apples Stuffed With Dried Fruit and Pecans. Yum. This would be a perfect breakfast meal, accompaniment to a lunch, or even used for a desert. I think I would switch out the pecans for walnuts, but either way, I'm sure this stuffed, baked apple packs a delicious punch and is healthy enough to indulge in a few times a week. This is a great recipe because it can be switched up on a daily basis by simply changing the fruit and nuts you use; use walnuts and dried apricots together, almonds and dried pears, or cashews and dates. I think this is a simple, healthy, and scrumptious sounding recipe perfect for the beginning of Autumn!

Baked Apples Stuffed With Dried Fruit and Pecans from Gourmet Magazine, December 2002
Active time:
12 min; start to finish:1 1/2 hr; serves 4

Ingredients:
  • 4 (6-oz) red apples such as Gala or Rome Beauty
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped dried apricots
  • 2 tablespoons dried currants
  • 2 tablespoons chopped pecans, toasted
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (1/2 tablespoon softened and 1/2 tablespoon cut into 4 pieces)
  • 1/2 cup unfiltered apple cider
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup low-fat vanilla or maple yogurt
  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Core apples with corer. Stand apples up and make 4 evenly spaced vertical cuts starting from top of each apple and stopping halfway from bottom to keep apple intact. Brush inside of apples with lemon juice and stand apples in a 9-inch ceramic or glass pie plate.
  • Toss together apricots, currants, pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Rub softened butter into dried-fruit mixture with your fingers until combined well, then pack center of each apple with mixture. Put a piece of remaining butter on top of each apple. Pour cider and vanilla around apples and cover pie plate tightly with foil.
  • Bake in middle of oven, basting once, until apples are just tender when pierced with a fork, about 40 minutes. Remove foil and continue to bake until apples are very tender but not falling apart, 20 to 30 minutes more.
  • Transfer to serving dishes and spoon sauce over and around apples. Serve with dollops of yogurt.
Let us know if you make this recipe! I sure will be making it this weekend.

Happy First Day of School to all my fellow teachers out there! In celebration of summer ending, I vacationed to good ol' Colonial Williamsburg, which I have dubbed, "The Loveliest Place on Earth." While there, I had to do what Colonials did and wore a gorgeous straw hat; lest me remind you all, I am so not a hat person, so the fact that I wore a hat all over Virginia definitely made it to the top ten list of "Things Olivia Does Not Do." However, I adore this hat. The straw was light to wear, easy to hold when not on my head, and totally jived with every one of my outfits. Either with my loose white top and white jeans, or with my dress and jean jacket, even with my cowboy boots, the hat went perfectly. I was more than pleasantly surprised that it didn't bother me to wear it, the brim didn't hinder my eyesight, and it looked good with my hair up or down. Sounds like the perfect hat to me.

Even though my ideal hat is as simple as can be, I love the idea of ribbons and bows on hats, as well. This is why I love the Natural Straw Sun Hat from Nadine New York. The Panama style hat is "Trimmed with grosgrain ribbon roses that are sweet but still a little on the wild side. Ribbon edge binding finishes the look." I think the roses are classy, traditional, yet add a perfect twist to a straw hat; the wide ribbon adds a very elegant character to the hat, making it able to be dressed up or down. Also, contact Nadine if you want another color ribbon (perhaps to match a dress or coat of yours?).

What to wear with the hat?

For the perfect...
...date night style: Pair the hat with the Knotted Back Floral Dress.
...first day of school outfit: Wear the hat with the
Blurred Floral Knit Dress.
...night out with the girls ensemble: The hat will complement the Dainty Flower Chiffon Dress.
...errands around town look: Match the hat with the
Nina Ruffled Dress.

What a Lovely Innovation!

Upon looking for luggage to share with you lovelies I encountered an amazing new innovation by Hermes, one of my favorite companies I cannot yet afford, but one day will cloak myself in. Hermes calls it the "SilkyPop" bag, it looks like a little leather zippered wallet, which when opened pops out into a silk tote bag. Hermes does two things, leather and silk--bags and scarves, this amazing little accessory combines both. It's perfect for travel, throw one in your purse, even your pocket and be ready to buy whatever the day shall bring-- a baguette, a fat wedge of brie, and a bottle of wine, a bouquet of flowers, or a new cashmere sweater, and a pretty head band with an oversized flower. And for the bargain price of $960. Yes, one day SilkyPop, you and I will be united.

Lovely Luggage

There are many, many things I love in this world. And one of them happens to be luggage. I so desperately wish I could travel with beautiful non-rolling luggage, but this would require 1. someplace to go, and 2. a porter. I've always loved the idea of a steamer trunk-- an upright trunk that opens up into a wardrobe, I'm sorry is there anything better in the universe?

Well, competing with it, in concept alone, is the Saratoga Trunk--a round topped wooden and leather or metal trunk whose purpose was to hold the exact amount of clothes one would need for a summer season at Saratoga Springs, New York. I just love that concept-- that the trunk was fabricated specifically to last a summer. I want a trunk for a summer, and then I'd like someone to fill it for me, push it behind me while I whip out my passport, and then I'd like a place to go for the summer. Who wants me? You've got nine months to prepare, until next June. Any takers?

Lovely Dress of the Day

The impending fall season makes me crave all kinds of things, apple cider, jean jackets, cute flats and, most importantly, jazz music. Mod Cloth once again provides with their delicious Jazz Singer Dress in Ella, beyond the fact that I love the ruffles on the neckline, the waist which allows me to cinch it as tight as I'd like it to be and the flowiness of the skirt, I can't help but marvel at someone's genius to proclaim the dresses print "Ella." Moreover, there's a Billie too. Brilliance! Sheer brilliance I tell you!

Lovely Weeknd Round-Up

  • Forever 21's Faux Leather Jacket, so delicious so fall! (especially over a pretty summer converted floral dress, can you imagine!?)
  • Oatmeal Double Chocolate Chip cookies, which I made yesterday.. the perfect entrance into fall!

Lovely on Long Island

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to receive a visit from the terrific Tom, a true throw back. Tom is the type of guy who takes you to brunch, surreptitiously hides a copy of The Great Gatsby in your bag and then insists on referring to you as Daisy Bucchanan and himself as Nick Carraway for the rest of the day until you agree to read it. Nota bene: I loved it. So you can understand why Tom was more than happy to come visit the land of East and West Egg, and even agreed to exploring areas not mentioned in the book, what a gentleman.

Moreover, Tom is the type of guy who shaves with a straight razor, calls his elder's sir and still carries a Nikon FM2 SLR with real film. And he takes beautiful pictures on it. I couldn't help but share some of his shots of Northport and Huntington with you lovelies. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed my day with Tom.Looking down Main street towards the water in Northport.

As Olivia mentioned in a previous post, our absolutely wonderful cousin Katie has recently become engaged to her creative and handsome now fiancee Rocco, and the whole family has gone into wedding lock down mode. Wedding is all over everyone's mind, I mean after all, we only have 14 months to plan the wedding of a lighting designer and a costume/set designer-- the wedding needs to be impressive, beautiful and above all else unique. I find myself entirely preoccupied by venues, menus and something blues, which brings us to today's Etsy Find of the Day. Heather the retired chef turned momma turned creative charmer who operates Cherry Creek Charms provides beautiful custom made bouquet charms on pretty blue ribbons for the perfect completion of any wedding, "something old, something new, something borrowed and something..." from Cherry Creek Charms. Heather offers precious customized charms with the bride and groom's initials as well as the date of the wedding in a number of clearly considered styles to compliment many different wedding styles. I think for Katie and Rocco I'd have to go with number 2, the minimal style, I like that it has two charms with such a modern yet classic flair.

1. Chery Blossom Wedding Bouquet Charm, 2. Minimal Wedding Bouquet Charm, 3. Wedding Bouquet Charm.

What a perfect commemorative gift for the bride, she can frame the entire piece or remove the ribbon and hang the charms on a necklace, charm bracelet or even convert them to a pair of earrings. A gift that is truly Lovely for life.
