Lovely Weekend, Lovelies!

Tomorrow is Halloween! I spent yesterday baking cookies, stuffing candy bags, and sewing finishing touches onto my costume, Max from "Where the Wild Things Are". Today I want to dress up in costume all day and run around being wild, chasing the dog and telling anyone who will listen that I'll "eat them up!" While I do that, you enjoy my weekly roundup!

Most importantly, remember to have a fun, safe Halloween--make it spooky, make it scary, make it lovely!

Lovely Dress of the Day

So, to finish off this week with a bang not a fizzle, I had a brilliant beyond brilliant idea. I started in on this costume for '60s housewife, but was chafing a bit under my feminism--how did i feel about that, about making that a costume? I couldn't place it, but it just felt wrong. This dress from Target's Xhiliration line for $24.99 had to stay though, because it looks just like a lot of Modcloth dresses I've posted but for under $30! So I thought about it. And then I realized that this girl, with her party dress, silk pumps and little white gloves was not necessarily anything but Lovely. She was A Lovely. So today's Halloween costume is self promotion.

Wear this "tea party appropriate" costume or anything else that makes you feel Lovely-- a little dressy, a little special and when people ask what you are tell them "I'm a Lovely," or for a little Cole Porter giggle tell them "I'm de Lovely." And when they said "What's a Lovely" tell them to go to LovelyAtYourSide.com--see, self promotion.

Fine, fine that's not enough incentive for you? I can do better, I can go lovelier. Send Olivia and me a picture of you dressed up as a Lovely for Halloween and we will send you a lovely gift bag surprise. So, get out there and get ready for the Lovely holiday! Go, go my lovelies!

As an older sister, I always want to make sure my younger siblings are safe, happy, and get wonderful holiday gifts. I love watching my siblings grow up and cultivate their own lives, and while I'm so proud of them for forging their own paths, sometimes I worry when I'm not there to make sure everything is okay. This is why I love the "Modern Feminine Evil Eye Cocktail Ring" from MerCurios; I may not always be there to protect my siblings, but if they wear this gorgeous, unique, and original evil eye ring, I know someone will be protecting them, even if I am miles away. I stumbled across this ring because I was doing a "Local Search" on Etsy and MerCurios is based off of Long Island; I fell in love with this ring. I love it's artistic, bold, yet understated style. The copper ring is sure to block all evil spirits! I love the organic nature of the ring; the curves and twists of the copper look so unintentional, yet are formed perfectly. What a perfect holiday present for your sisters, older or younger; they will love the mature look of the ring, and the original quality of it means that you picked it out specifically for them. Plus, as with any present you buy your sister, you have full reign to borrow it whenever you want! Lovely!

Lovely Dress of the Day

In an effort to be ever new and interesting to you lovelies, I bring you this fun and different costume-- Pablo Picasso. My dear, unhelpful friend Luis pointed out to me that Picasso wore sweaters and sweatshirts, and pants...not dresses, and that girls too wear pants. I reminded him that it was the dress of the day, and raised the point that at some point Picasso probably did wear a dress: artists, you know?

Anyway, this Envelope Neck Jersey Dress from Old Navy is my kind of dress, I love, love stripes. Wear it with black boots, black tights and carry around a paint brush, the bigger the better (easier to recognize). When someone asks you how you are, say "blue" and giggle. Talk about art and allow yourself an evening of sounding pretentious. If you want to really go for it in more of a "Parisian Artist" direction and less of a Picasso, wear a beret. I'd wear a beret all the time if I could, but Halloween is a great excuse.

Re-purpose it with a jean jacket and flats, even with the same black boots and no paint brush. The stripes are a very easy look to do simply because the dress has enough interest on its own, it doesn't need much embellishment. Wear it with Gap circa 1990s in mind and you can't go wrong.
Women's Envelope Neck Jersey Dress; Tall Flat Leather Riding Boots.

Come to think of it, there are so many artists which make really lovely costumes-- Frida Khalo, Salvador Dali, and Andy Warhol just to name a few. What other awesome artist costumes can you lovelies think of? I'd love to know!

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

One of the trickiest presents to buy, I think, for the holidays is the present for your sibling's significant other. I think it's oddly hard to pick out a present for them for multiple reasons: 1. You can't get them a gift which is better or outdoes the gift your sibling gets them; 2. You don't want to cross that blurry line between "I think you're great for my sibling and I think you're a cool person" and "Oh my god, I love you in our family, marry my sibling." See my point? It's a tricky little gift to get perfect. But, I'm all for perfection in gifts, so here's what I think is the perfect present to get your sibling's S.O.

Let's start with the sister's boyfriend. This has to be a gift which says, "I like hanging with you and my sister; I think you're a great guy; and, I like getting to know you, so I will get you something which shows I sort of know your style." For some reason I'm really digging this Walnut Duck Call Style Key Ring/Toothpick Holder; I adore the dark wood color of it. It's a one-of-a-kind hand-turned item which would be sure to add class and style to any set of keys. This keychain, has "The body of this distinctive and useful key ring/toothpick holder, is walnut finished to a satin luster using friction polish and is accented in bright gold. " Sounds lovely and gentleman like! I love that it is also a toothpick holder; it's a gorgeous gift and multi-functional! Not only can it hold toothpicks, but it "could hide, toothpicks, floss, paper money, reminder notes, etc., inside the 10mm chrome plated brass tube used to insure personal hygiene when used as a toothpick holder or pill box." Your sister could throw little love notes into their new keyring! Lovely idea. Not only is this a great gift for your sister's S.O. but any brother, your S.O., dad, or grandpa would adore this gift as well.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's gift pick: Your brother's S.O.'s present!

PS. The bride-to-be, Cousin Kate's Fiance, Rocco, suggested that men like anything they can eat; so check out these great edible gift ideas I've stumbled across for your sister's SO: I love these Caramel Apple Cookies! They are adorable and sound so delicious! I'm also loving this Sushi Candy; what an ironic and fun gift!

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

Okay Lovelies, it is official: 8 weeks until Christmas! Uh, I don't know if I don't mention it enough, but I. Love. The. Holiday. Season. Since I've already started holiday shopping, I thought we would start together over here at Lovely. Everyday over here at Lovely we'll be highlighting a gift pick for specific people in our lives (think: moms, dads, brothers, best friends). But, Lovelies, I need your help! Do tell: who are you buying for this holiday season? I want to make sure we cover the gamut of gifts, and I need your suggestions in order to do that. So, please, speak up! Let us know who you'll be spending your money on this year.

Today's Etsy Find of the Day is a Lovely Present Pick for the grandmother in your life. Grandparents love to show off pictures of their grandchildren. What a better present to get for your favorite grandma than this Off White Rose Picture Frame from Cranberry Creek Hollow. I love the antique look of this frame; and the color would fit perfectly in any room. The sweet little rose on the top of the frame adds a very romantic element to the frame. What a perfect way for your grandmother to highlight pictures of her grandchildren's graduation, wedding, school pictures, or memories of visiting her in the summertime. I know both my grandmothers would love this frame; it's not too kitschy or silly looking, it would be a great addition to their homes. It's definitely one of those pieces that people would visit and say, "Where did you get that?! I love it!" So, get your grandmother the perfect present and maybe she'll actually admit this year that you actually are the favorite grandchild.

Lovely Seasonal Skirts.

My lovelies! I've been so, so into skirts recently-- particularly the brilliantly priced ones from Forever21. I've been looking through and ooh-ing and ah-ing at how perfect a skirt would be for Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas and Hanukkah. I'm sharing with you some of my favorites.

Lovely Dress of the Day

In thinking of great costumes for great lovelies, I can't help but be inspired by great women. Amelia Earhart jumped into my head, despite her mysterious disappearance, Amelia was a brave, smart and inspiring woman. And I think she would make a fantastic costume with lots of part to re-purpose.

Belted Tweed Dress, Charlotte Russe; Fleece Bomber Jacket, Charlotte Russe; Vintage Leather Brown Lace Up Riding Boots, Santoki Vintage via Etsy.

Match this fantastic, very Teddy Roosevelt generation tweed dress, which you can wear all through fall especially with a leotard underneath, with a leather jacket-- a bomber works best, but any that's sort of cropped at the waist will give the same feel. Accessories with brown or grey leather boots and a white scarf. Top the outfit off with the probably won't be re-purposed part you can buy at the costume shop--an aviator cap and goggles...which I looked for everywhere, there's a surprisingly small number out there. And the "Amelia Earhart" kits are ALL sold out. Or out of stock. Does this mean there will be a ton of Amelias running around? We'll see I suppose! Let us know how many Amelias you see running about, or rather flying... I'll report back too!

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

This weekend my beautiful friend Kim came to visit. While here we attended this wild music jam; it was one of the most unbelievable experiences in my life. It was held in a barn, which was converted to a house, and was piled from floor to ceiling with odds and ends from antique shops, tag sales, garbage sales, and God knows where. Kim fell in love with the Green Man pottery on some of the walls and of course, since I didn't know what Green Man pottery was, I had to look it up. Apparently, a "Green Man" is a "sculpture, drawing, or other representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Branches or vines may sprout from the nose, mouth, nostrils or other parts of the face and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit." They are a popular adornment for gardens and houses, for they have a spiritual sense to them, and are almost thought of as a spirit that will watch over your vegetation and home. What a lovely idea! I love the idea of a piece of gorgeous art watching over your garden; and of course, the best place to find your Green Man statue is our favorite store, Etsy.

I totally fell in love with this Greenman Plaque from My Garden Goddess (love that name!). This piece of an original design by the artist-sculptor Alice was, "molded the piece, cast concrete into the mold and hand stained the finished stone to create a beautiful patina effect. The color helps enhance the details and also protects the concrete from the outdoor elements." I absolutely love that this is a unique piece and can't be found in a chain store. This Green Man statue would look great in your garden, keeping an eye on your wild flowers, especially as the seasons change to Winter and the flowers need some extra encouragement to come up in the Spring! While this isn't an antique Green Man sculpture, I think it's just as amazing because it was hand-crafted and designed by a unique artist. What a great Mother's Day gift, Holiday present, or due to the low price, a lovely"anytime present" for the gardener in your life!

Lovely Change of Events.

Sorry for the delay on posts today-- we were surprised this morning by a tremendous and terribly sweet (as far as we can tell) German Shepard. Our Pip is going wild inside while the German munches on snacks outside. Sadly Pip is a bit too excitable, thinking she is a big dog and plays too rough, which causes the German to play rough, and Pip is about 1/16th the size of the German. The police are on their way-- there is no name on the doggy, no number but some sort of "NY STATE, ALBANY" situation. If anyone knows of a German Shepard lost in the Western Suffolk County area, please, please contact us here at Lovely At Your Side. This dog has been in the area for a few days, but today was the first we could grab it. He/She seems to have an electric collar, so I imagine someone misses this pup very much.

A Lovely Reminder.

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month I present you, my lovely readers, with this very smart commercial from the Style Network on the new breast cancer self check method. Show it to your mothers, sisters, girl friends, girlfriends, aunts, cousins, co-workers, whoever. It's a great reminder. It's a cute commercial.

Lovely Dress of the Day

Today, when I began my search for my Lovely Dress I went to type in "LovelyDressoftheDay.com" into my browser. Whoops.

Anyway, with Halloween right around the corner I've decided to make sure that every dress this week has a re-purpose as a Halloween costume, and because I really DO love you lovelies so, I've tried to find dresses from popular mall stores. So that you don't have to order things off line so close to the holiday! Just run out to the store. See I really do think of you babies!

Sometimes when I panic I call my good friend Alex, also known as Sasha, alias Alpal and Sashki, she is calm as a cucumber while she talks me through whatever issue is at hand-- and the other day is was costumes. We threw ideas back and forth until she hit upon an adorable, adorable costume idea-- which I'm sharing with you loves right now-- a lumberjack costume.

What a fantastic re-purposing idea--plaid is in right now and plaid tunics are huge! Throw together a plaid tunic or dress, black tights (or "denim" leggings!) and some imposing boots, black lace ups, or hiking boots, something of the sort. Top the look off with a knit cap or a faux fur hat and a big plastic ax from the costume shop.

Natalie Dress, Abercrombie and Fitch; Fleurish Shirt Dress, Macy's; Women's Plaid Belted Shirt Dress, Old Navy.

Lord and Taylor, Urban Outfitters, Gap.

Get the ax here, for under $6!

Lumberjack is a great re-wearable, recyclable costume -- the only piece you might not reuse is the ax, and for a piece which so clearly brings the costume together and its low, low price, it's worth the potential one night only use!

I'd love to hear your costume ideas, or re-purposing ideas! Bring them on lovelies!

Lovely Weekend, Lovelies!

Friday already? Tomorrow marks one week until Halloween, so get your costume in order this weekend, start stocking up on candy and prepare yourself for all the spooky Vampires, Ghosts and Hannah Montanas on your door step. In the mean time, enjoy some lovely things inspiring me right now!

  • My Paper Crane's Pinata Cake, what a cool, cool idea! The cake is essentially a cake covered high with treats and then topped off, hidden by a chocolate shell which can be decorated and then broken into. What an amazing concept! My Paper Crane's pictures make the cake look so insanely delicious too!
Enjoy my lovelies!

Lovely Dress of the Day

I know this dress doesn't actually match the Wonder Woman costume. I know. But there's something about it which is just so reminiscent of it. Makes me want to wear thick gold cuffs and a gold crown (thank God my costume includes a crown!). I like the Alter Ego Dress from Modcloth as a Wonder Woman costume because it is sexy, powerful and yet not overly or overtly sexy-- you will be dressed in this costume, you will be appropriately dressed in this costume. Match it with some great red boots, which you will wear over and over, I promise, an authentic Wonder Woman crown, and for a little added warmth throw on a cape! Wonder Woman out and up, lovelies!

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

Well, Lovelies, we made it! Another Friday is here. What are you all doing this weekend? Anything outrageous? I've been looking forward to this weekend for a long time for two major reasons: E's family is in town and I'm making this amazing recipe for Banana Coconut Cream Pie in honor of this lovely weekend visit. I've made this recipe before and it came out pretty good!..it's not an easy recipe to figure out, and one sort of has to literally move fast to throw the whole thing together, especially with the making meringue (and making this pie was my first, ever, attempt at making meringue--usually, that's Jenny's thing!). I'm really looking forward to getting it right this time and working out all the kinks that I learned from last time I made it; I'm even hauling an electric hand mixer on cars, trains, and subways today because I don't have my coveted Kitchen Aid mixer (yet!).

If you don't have time to bake a banana cream pie this weekend, than check out these beautiful and delicious smelling soaps from Etsy. This Banana Cream Sugar Scrub from the store Be Good Naturals is 8 ounces of body scrub for under ten dollars (yes!) and is made "with pure cane sugar suspended in a base Shea butter, jojoba oil, and Castile soap." It's sure to leave you feeling smooth as butter and smelling delicious, like banana cream pie! What's a better way to end a crazy week than to scrub down with natural ingredients and bask in the bath? Sounds lovely.

If you're more into soap than body scrub, try out the Banana Cream Pie Soap from Naturally Pampered. I love this bar of soap, made from shea butter, because it literally looks like a banana cream pie! How adorable. I love that they mimic merengie in a bar of soap. Brilliant. What a great idea for a gift for guests, a bridal shower, mother's day, or just to make your bathroom smell like a bakery!

What pie would you mimic in a soap? Have a lovely weekend!

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

Know what I'm loving on this beautiful day? "You mean the world to me" presents. I love those little gifts that you give your friends, lovers, parents, grandparents which they totally don't expect and brings that amazing smile to their face which never leaves your memory. This could be a book that they've always wanted, a CD which you know that they would love, a batch of fresh baked cookies, or maybe a pair of wool gloves to keep their hands warm while they drive early in the winter mornings. Random acts of little gifts for love aren't meant to be expensive, expansive, or time consuming. They should demonstrate that you not only love the person, but know them well enough to get them something which would make them grin. Today's Lovely Etsy Find of the Day is a perfect "Just because" gift. This custom stamped ring from one of our favorite stores, Of the Fountain is a silver plated ring on which you can have anything stamped onto it. What a perfect way to tell someone that you love them, are proud of them, for them to have a good day, or simply their monogram. And why is this a perfect rainy-day gift? It's only $5.95! The price of the ring, plus the shipping would be under $9! You can't get any more lovely than that! This is a great holiday present for all the special women in your life; buy these to remember a special time, place, or person; buy these to say thank you or I love you; buy these just because they are gorgeous, lovely, and a great price!

Who would you send this ring as a "just because" gift to...and what would you put on it?

Lovely Gift Idea

With the holidays around the corner I present you with these fantastic stocking stuff-ers from CafePress, designed by yours truly from one of my earlier ventures--Life In Wax. Get these designs on t-shirts, notebooks, bags, sweatshirts, stickers, magnets and more!
Check out many, many more designs over at Life In Wax on CafePress.

Lovely Dress of the Day

The Pleats and Thank You Dress from Modcloth makes me want to run out and get a bob. Like, right now. I want bangs, a bob. I want Louise Brooks Hair. And I want it now. And I want that dress. And then I want to walk kicking my feet out and thinking about going to the speak easy once dark comes. I want to window shop in this dress and maybe even wear a cloche. I want to walk a small, well trained dog with a silly name in this dress (and no, my dog does not qualify, well trained she is not), maybe "schnitzie" or "schotzie." I want to go barelegged in this dress, with saddle shoes on my feet. This dress inspires volumes in me. What will it inspire in you?

Lovely Meeting: Fashion Advice from the Two Man Gentlemen Band.

I fell in love with the music of the Two Man Gentleman band closing in on two years ago-I knew I loved their music, but was still vaguely concerned about meeting them, because as they say, never meet your idols as they're bound to disappoint you. And we all know I'll probably never meet Martha Stewart, Nigella Lawson or Ina Garten (calling all people who DO know these three, I am not beyond meeting my idols, introduce me! introduce me!) but as far as reachable, meet-able local idols goes, the Two Man Gentleman Band is it. So yes, I was a bit anxious about meeting them. But, as you could guess from their brilliant etiquette posts on their blog "Letters From the Gentlevan" the Two Men, Andy and Fuller are nothing but gracious, humorous, fun and polite.

In a very, very un-Jenny and un-Lovely move I was late. Bad, bad interviewer. I walked up to our appointed meeting point, Pianos a bit confused and befuddled (very, very Jenny). It was then I spotted two men standing out from the crowd--taller, yes. But also, well dressed, handsome and striking-- there is something about Fuller and Andy that just stands out. Something different in their air, their nature. Both men stood in front of me on this October evening in suits. In an ivory slim cut suit and button down, sans tie Fuller cut a perfect Nick Carraway. And Andy in a black suit with a sweater vest, also without a tie maybe Jay Gatsby himself.
We began chatting immediately, with an explanation of what "gentleman casual" (sounds very fitting with "tea party appropriate", and Olivia's favorite "cowboy casual") is: "basically it means we don't wear ties" Andy quipped. Andy points to Fuller's unbuttoned collar and explains that he usually accessorizes with a tie. Fat, stripped, bold, solid, bow-- these gents have them all, wear them all, and pull them all off. With suspenders too. Try and beat that.

Fuller points to his bare head and explains that part of their "gentleman casual" look for the evening included his lack of hat. The two men are often photographed and perform in vintage derby caps, fedoras, and boaters. The hats can transform their look from modernly stylized to undeniably rag time. When worn properly the hats are a fabulous accessory, for your gentleman, or for you, Ms. Annie Hall!

Standing next to the milieu of skinny jean-ed hipsters, punks and rockers which comprise the Lower East Side, Andy and Fuller stood out in the best way possible, they were noticeable for all the right reasons, for looking put together, yet artistic and most importantly approachable. This is not unintentional-- their wardrobes are considered, and hand picked. "We can afford to only go shopping like once a week," Andy tells me. "Oh, only" I quip back, "Quite the recessionistas, I see." Andy laughs, "We don't buy everything once a week, we just look around." And Andy makes a good point here, "just find clothes that [you] like" and invest in those-- keep your eyes open, but your wallet closed until absolutely necessary (like dresses from Modcloth, and Forever21, and luscious leather boots, and cashmere gloves from Lord and Taylor... and this is how you get yourself in trouble.)

Their sound is a mixture of "hot jazz, vintage rhythm & blues, old-time country, and tin pan alley to create a joyous two-man sound that is all their own" and from that I assumed their look followed. Form follows function, right babies? Dress to the music you're playing, right? Well, Andy quickly corrected that theory. Dress the part, he explained, even when you're playing music in Central Park for pigeons and trees.

"We knew we needed to wear suits because no one would give money to street performers who looked like bums" Andy said with a smile and vague shrug.

Stay tuned for "Lovely Meeting" part two tomorrow...

Lovely Dress of the Day

Since I am literally steps away from Forever21, or as I call it "home," it seems only appropriate to feature Forever21 in our dress of the day. And if it isn't already clear that we love flappers and flapper gear here at Lovely At Your Side, then this dress will prove it. There's not much more to be said that hasn't already been said. Fringe makes everything better. I love the detail of the buttons on the back. This timeless and fabulous "Scalloped Fringe Dress" is under $30.

A Lovely Change of Setting.

Sometimes writing from home can be hard, between the dishes needing to be done, the laundry needing to be changed and a little puppy who makes finding a work flow incredibly impossible sometimes, I find myself, at moments, in need of a change of scenery. For me things like, writing, responding to emails, even brainstorming can seriously be aided by leaving the house and finding some place new and different to write. When I lived in Manhattan my go-to place was Think Coffee, the Bleeker street location was directly across the street from my last apartment and I would often find myself working through papers, Russian presentations and even (when there was a free moment, rare, rare, rare, I assure you!) essays, poems and the occasional short story. Maybe my mind works better when I have something I must tune out. Maybe it is inspired by all the people around me. Whatever the reason, it is a fact that I work better out of the house.

And so today, no longer a Manhattan girl, I find myself working on multiple posts, writing emails and trying to map out our next steps in the most Long Island of all Long Island places--the Smith Haven Mall. Yes, that's right. My lovely suggestion of the day is to get out of the house if you find yourself hitting a road block when it comes to work. Get out of the house, find a book store, a coffee shop, or, yes, even a mall. I do have to say-- to the malls credit: the work is flying out of my fingers. There's something very, very invigorating about working here. Maybe it's all the little girls in princess costumes for some event at the Disney Store. Or the teenage couples holding hands. Or the endless stream of people floating past me-- shopping bags in hand.

Whatever it is it's working, and it's my recommendation for you for the day-- change the setting, change the scenery and see what changes in you. Just for a day, just for an hour, just for a blog post.

Lovely Meeting.

They say you learn something new every day-- today I learned the phrase "gentleman casual," that it is possible to do 200 shows a year and be a [seemingly] normal person, and that Fuller Condon of The Two Man Gentlemen Band does not like, I repeat, does not like "favorite questions." Despite "favorite questions" being one of my favorite sorts of questions, the Gentlemen, even Fuller, were still gracious interviewees. Stay tuned for our three part series on The Two Man Gentlemen Band.
While I tease through, prepare and try to remember, enjoy Andy and Fuller's blog, Letters from The Gentlevan, which includes everything from tales of the road to etiquette tips, tricks and quizzes. Enjoy, lovelies!

While you're at it, keep tabs of the Gents via Facebook! And pull out your credit card and invest in some good music and good times by buying at least one of their four excellent CDs.

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

I love Norah Jones. I think she is one of the loveliest people out there. She's so real, gorgeous, and of course, one of this world's most amazing musicians. This weekend I watched an outstanding Norah Jones Concert DVD and while sitting here, gawking over how unbelievable she is, I decided, just for the heck of it, to type her name into the Etsy box...well, low and behold, something came up, and not just any old thing, but a gorgeous ring (and we all know how I feel about rings...they are pretty much my financial downfall)!

How lovely is the "Don't Know Why Ring" from Esmerelda Designs (whom, by the way is a fellow Long Islander!)? I love the sketched tree on the ring and the unique shape of the ring. I don't just love the ring, however, I love the description of the ring as well, "Listening to Norah Jones singing don't know why while making this ring. Sometimes its not easy to understand ones own choices...and that's all right. I carved a tree onto the ring, for sitting under and enjoying the journey instead of trying to explain it...and wrote enjoy the journey on the opposite side for good measure." That couldn't be a more honest statement! There's nothing lovelier than enjoying the journey in life and not worrying about the destination. I love jewelry with a message (remember my big summer purchase from Kathryn Riechert's store?) and this ring has it all: a beautiful image and a lovely sentiment to coincide with it. What a great present for yourself or someone you believe in!

A Lovely Disaster: Chicken Parmesan

So, this past Saturday night, E was playing a show and therefore, I thought, "Great, I have a ton of work to do anyway, so I'll cook dinner and do some writing while it's in the oven!" However, as it is with most things: easier said than done. We decided on Chicken Parmesan, so we ran out before the show, got all the ingredients, he quickly left and the first thought that popped into my head was "Why don't I clean the fridge out so I can put all my new food into a clean fridge?" Smart move, Olivia. He left at about 4:30 and by 5:15 this had occurred: a bottle of Italian lemon soda decided to literally jump out of the fridge and explode at my feet. Luckily my boots were handy, so I jumped into those and set to work. I hate broken glass (I mean, who loves broken glass?) and the floor was all sticky...but, suffice it to say, I cleaned it up in no time (okay, some time) at all and set to work on the Chicken Parm.

The recipe that I based my Chicken Parm (and let me warn you, I'm not really an Italian food expert by uh, any means, so this is all sort of trial and error) on is this recipe. However, I hate using bread crumbs for things, so I played around with some different ideas and came up with my own Chicken Parm recipe. I like to call this one, "Broken Glass Chicken Parm." Mind you, I don't really measure anything ever....so I give you full permission to throw away your measuring cups for this recipe and do as the Romans do, measure by feel and sight!

For the bread crumbs I make a mixture of seasoned bread crumbs, wheat flour, and Italian spices (I found a great Italian spice mix by Morton & Bassett). For the chicken, I used pre-cut sliced chicken breast pieces found in the regular poultry section of the grocery. As E says, any Italian meal is all about the Sauce, and while I didn't make my own today, I did pick up Victoria, (all natural ingredients!); also needed is mozzarella cheese, shredded Parmesan cheese, eggs, and olive oil.

After I make the bread crumb mixture, I wash the chicken (wash my hands!), crack two egg whites and one whole egg into a dish; whisk that together; get a frying pan, fill it with some delicious olive oil; turn on oven to medium-high heat. I dredge the chicken in the egg, then in the bread crumbs, and then throw it in pan! Easy as pie (or shall we say as fried chicken?).

After the chicken is done browning, throw it all in a baking dish; also into the baking dish: mozzarella on top of the chicken, the jar of sauce, more cheese, more cheese, and more cheese. Sprinkle some Parmesan on top of everything, throw in oven (350), give it about half an hour to forty five minutes. While you're waiting, go browse Lovely's store (wink!). Take out from oven and impress everyone in your life. It's the most simple, delicious, and not so unhealthy recipe! Even those who break jars can figure this one out...

Addendum: While making the pasta for this meal I nearly started a giant fire, who knew that a piece of fettuccine would flame up like a match? Despite all trials in the making of this meal, it was absolutely amazing, so easy to do, and I can't wait to make it again. The Parmesan added a slight crust to the top, the chicken was flavorful and juicy, and the cheese and sauce complemented each other to a tee! What a great "we're having people over tonight?!" meal!

*I apologize for the horrible picture; all I had on hand was my iPhone and I wanted to show everyone the broken glass disaster!

Lovely Day, No Lovely Dress

Hey Lovelies! Just a quick reach out while I rush around today-- there will be no dress of the day today, sadly. Just not a moment to spare. I am however taking every spare moment to prepare for my long anticipated meeting with the fantastic, talented and lovely Two Man Gentlemen Band. Andy Bean and Fuller Condon, the two gents who comprise the band, have taken up a rare cause-- they play seriously catchy, fun and sometimes outrageously inappropriate songs to an "old timey" "neo-vaudevillian" sound. They dress themselves in walking caps, tweed and bow ties and are known to give quite the performance- as if their songs don't have enough life through my iPhone, apparently they burn even brighter in person. Sadly, there's no performance tonight. But I cannot wait to report back to you lovelies with their words of wisdom, hilarity and fashion tips!

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

On my friend Ali's blog she posted about these beyond amazing His and Hers pillows for the Urban Age from one of our favorite websites, Darling Dexter. This got me thinking about His and Hers pillows; ironically, when I clicked onto Etsy today, the first item to come up as featured were these Mr. & Mrs. pillows from I Do Take U's store (I love that name!). I think these pillows are lovely for yourself and the husband, or to give as a gift to a new bride and groom (and remember what I said about well-priced wedding gifts?!) I love the color of these pillows, they would easily go with any room's color scheme. And, as a true font-aholic, I happen to love the font that she chose to make these in. It's romantic, but not girly and too silly looking. I Do Take U also sells a Spanish version, the Senor y Senora Scatter Pillows; what a great idea! I wish I had thought of that! Ann, the owner of I Do Take U reminds us that pillows can be custom made with your color choices, initials, or perhaps "His" and "Hers" in another language?!

What would you put on your His&Hers pillows? I think I'd go for "Uxor Et Vir" which is Wife and Man in Latin.

PS. Check out these adorable leather His&Hers luggage tags from Of The Fountain! I LOVE these. How vintage looking and lovely. Again, a great alternative to an expensive present for the next wedding you attend!

PPS. Thanks to Ali for the shout-out on her awesome blog, Push Bar To Open!

PPPS. Thought of Joanna Goddard with these His&Hers bicycle hankies from Cyanide Stitches!

Lovely Dress of the Day

How do you know when you're in love? When you're perfectly synced up. When you finish each other's sentences. Know the look in each other's. Anticipate each other's needs. That how you know. Babies, I have an announcement-- Modcloth and I are in love. I know this because last week when I was looking for Dorothy Dresses, it occurred to me that another cool convertible costume would be Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Then the thought sort of escaped my head, until this morning when I spotted Modcloth's new Gentlemen Prefer Pink Dress. And I knew, I knew that Modcloth and I were at the point where I could say "I love you, Modcloth"
While I don't think it quite hits the pink satin strapless I was originally looking for, the dress would be a fantastic costume for Lorelei before she boards the ship, or any character from Mad Men. Well, probably Joan. The dress has beautiful detail and fantastic attitude. Wear it whenever for a true confident look and watch to see that Gentlemen really do prefer Pink!

Lovely: Betty Draper Style

Morning Lovelies! Well, well, well...Glamour Magazine apparently is following in Lovely's footsteps and giving us all the heads up on how to dress like Betty Draper for less! On Glamour's blog, Slaves to Fashion, they wrote, "$50 & Under: Your Inner Betty Draper Is Calling" featuring the Carriage Tour Dress from our favorite store, ModCloth--it is very Betty Draper-ish and yet modern enough for the urban gal.

A while ago, here at Lovely, we featured a ton of gorgeous dresses that were reminiscent, not just of Betty Draper, but of all the Lovelies (Betty, Joan, and Peggy!) from Mad Men; check out the Lovely Dress of the Day: Mad Men Season Three Premiere Night and the Lovely Dress of the Day: Etsy Style Inspired by Ms. Draper herself.

What's your favorite Betty Draper Style? How about Joan Halloway? Peggy Olsen?

As I'm sure you know by now, I love personalized gifts. I think getting a present for someone and adding personalization adds that extra little touch of making the gift from the heart, unique, and special. It seems to me that everyone and their sister is getting married recently; while I love weddings, going to a lot of weddings can get pricey! Not only is there the wedding, but one has to attend a bridal shower, bachelorette party, engagement party...I'll be so broke from attending weddings that I won't have enough for my own! I kid, I kid. But, seriously, people always think that great gifts have to be expensive...au contraire, my Lovelies!

I came across these lovely personalized wooden napkin rings and immediately thought of what a great engagement present they would be. From the store Dawnberries, this set of 4 wooden napkin rings can be engraved with a name, phrase, or even a graphic. The wood is natural and uncoated with anything (and we all know how I feel about unpainted wooden objects) which means that they are safe to have around food. I love the Country feel of these; they are sturdy, yet old-fashioned looking and delicate. Wouldn't these be a great gift for a new bride and groom with their new name engraved? Or, get their wedding date engraved in; or, maybe a little graphic which describes them; or, maybe even the address of their first house together? The possibilities are endless, and so much fun to think about. I know that when your friend opens this gift, despite the amazingly low price, she will see how much time and effort went into you coming up with a good engraving and these being hand-made for her!

What would you have engraved in your wooden napkin rings?

Lovely Weekend, Lovelies!

My, my, weekends sneak up so fast on us sometimes. Friday already. Wow! This weekend we're ushering in fall, for real, with the last vineyard show, apple cider (there's no such thing as too much!) and the premiere of Where the Wild Things Are (it came out today! I can't believe I didn't make it to the midnight showing!). Enjoy the weekend, enjoy the movie, and enjoy somethings I'm loving right now!

  • Food photographer, writer and all around good guy Andrew Scrivani's new Jar of Sauce rating system on his refurbished website, Making Sunday Sauce. I am impressed by the ratings Scrivani gives certain Manhattan institutions, his takes are bold, and super honest, but very, very true.
  • These adorable cookie cluster cards. I really don't know what else I can say about them. So, so cute.
  • The very though provoking, truth inspiring blog entry by educator, mother extraordinaire, and lovely rockstar Liza about Columbus, Columbus Day, teaching our kids and truth.
  • Flagrante Delicia, it's just beautiful. Mark Bittman* approved, Jenny Lovely approved.

Lovely Dress of the Day

Two things I love in this world are re-interpretations and the ability to be re-worn. It's my own form of environmentalism, reduce, reuse, recycle. Re-interpret, re-wear, re-look fabulous. My college roommate Stephanie would be so proud. There's nothing I love more than buying a great dress for Halloween, looking absolutely lovely in it and then getting to wear it again whenever you want, or as the occasion calls for it. When I was 11 my cousin Katie had her sweet sixteen on Halloween--the very, very stylish 11 year old I was went as Holly Golightly in the opening scene of Breakfast at Tiffany's. After trick-or-treating I removed my costume accessories and changed my shoes and slipped right into party mode. When I was a sophomore in college I bought a blue and white polka dot dress for Halloween, went as a 1950's house wife and wore the dress with cowboy boots and a jean jacket for the rest of the fall.

This Halloween Olivia is going as Dorothy at the request of some of her students, that got me thinking-- how far can we get away from the Judy Garland Dorothy look, into something you'd actually re-wear and still have people know who you're dressed as?

Pair any of these dresses (1. Mariner Dress, 2. Tikirani Stripe Pinafore Dress, 3. Ginger Rock Dress) with a white button down (with a peter pan collar even!) or white leotard. Braid or pigtail your hair, carry a basket with a stuffed (or real, come here Pip!) dog. Most importantly, rock red shoes! Anything from red pumps, to ruby flats, to a pair of blood orange cowboy boots! Or, if you want to go really literary, and less cinematic, shine in silver-- never forget L. Frank Baum wrote Dorothy in magic silver slippers, not ruby!

Not only will people love your creative interpretation of a tried and true costume, but you'll be left with a dress you will re-wear, money well spent on a piece which enhances your wardrobe. Moreover, whenever you wear the dress you can carry that Halloween spirit with you throughout the year. And maybe some of that candy.

Lovely Dress of the Day

This past weekend Christina Hendricks, the gorgeous redheaded bombshell from Mad Men got married to her long time man fellow actor Geoffrey Arend, clearly she looked gorgeous-- but it wasn't her wedding dress that I couldn't get out of my head. When I saw this Grecian Greek Dress from Modcloth, all I could think of was how smashing Christina Hendricks looked at the 2008 Emmys in that green Greek inspired gown.

Yes, to be perfectly honest and revealing to you-- all day this was all I thought about. I found the dress this morning before running out the door, and thought about the dress on the drive to get coffee, on the way to the mall, while shopping at the mall, on the drive to my grandmothers, all through dinner, dessert and chatting and all the way home. I thought about how this Grecian Green Dress was an affordable and wearable option in place of the Tadashi Shoji gown Hendricks rocked. That's how I spent my day. So lovelies, if sometimes you become absolutely obsessed with a dress too, and if it happens to be that amazing green gown, then this is the dress for you. If you are not like me (read: crazy) this is probably still the dress for you. The bold color, the natural cinched waist, the flow of the skirt. I'm sorry, but what else could a girl ask for? Okay, okay fine...maybe an Emmy like our lovely Christina.

Lovely Rainy Day Dinner

What a drizzly day! Today would be a perfect day to cuddle up on the couch, watch a concert DVD, get out my crocheting, pull a fleece blanket over me, and never leave the couch until all this gross weather subsides. However, contrary to my daydream, I'm still at school, listening to the kids' gossip and quibbles. Today is the type of day that I would get home and feel like ordering take-out, but since I'm on this "One-month-til'-Vermont" eating healthy kick (so I can pretty much live on maple syrup on the trip) I'm trying to not eat take-out, and would need something quick, easy, and super healthy to eat. Luckily for us, Lovelies, our dear California Lovely, Laura has the ultimate recipe on her website for a night like tonight. I knew when I saw the picture of the Three-Ingredient Broccoli-Potato Soup that I would instantly fall in love with it. First of all, like I said, so healthy! Second, so cheap! Third, so delicious! Wouldn't this soup be amazing with a ham and cheese panini (perhaps made on the Williams Sonoma panini press which I am drooling over?)?! If you need a rainy-day, healthy dinner, check out Laura's recipe for this soup (check her out anyway, she's gorgeous and can cook!)

serves 2
1 Russet potato, peeled

1 cup broccoli stems

chicken broth or water to cover salt and pepper

Roughly chop potato into chunks. Place in pot and cover with broth or water. Bring to a boil. When you can easily stick a fork in the potato, add the broccoli and cook until tender – you might have to add a bit more broth to cover, but don’t go overboard. At this point, I like to puree my soup with an immersion blender, but it is also good peasant-style (chunky!). Salt and pepper to taste and you’ve got a hearty meal!

Lovely Etsy Find of the Day

As loyal readers and friends know, I am slightly obsessed with the holiday season. I love holiday music, decorations, food, and of course, shopping. Well, today I dove right into the holiday season and purchased the first holiday goods of 2009. I love decorating the tree; more than that, I love making my own ornaments. Last year, Jenny and I purchased wooden cut outs and got a bunch of silly family photos printed up. We glued the photos to the wooden ornaments, threw a little varnish on them, tied them with ribbon, and voila: a personalized tree! This year I decided I wanted to paint my own ornaments for the tree; I somehow came across Texas Art Craft's store and fell in love. I think a love of unpainted wooden items runs in the family; could it be genetic? Anyway, after sorting through amazing wooden cut-outs such as the Mythical Creatures set (wouldn't this look amazing in my classroom?!), the Lovely Teapots, and the Antique Cars set, I came upon the perfect ornaments for this years tree. This set of twelve wooden guitar cut-outs would be the ultimate ornament to decorate, paint, and hang for this year's holiday season. I could decorate them to be all sorts of brands; a vintage Martin, a Santa Cruz, a Parkwood (modeled after my Parkwood!), and of course a Gibson (the L-200 is my favorite and future guitar), Taylor, and a Washburn. How much fun is it going to be to research gorgeous guitars and mimic their beauty in a miniature form for my Christmas tree?! I simply cannot wait. I may even get a little wild and outfit these ornaments with real strings. Crazy talk. I'll definitely share the painting-party with you all when it happens...it may be a three-day event, we'll have to see.

Lovely Dress of the Day

I think I do declare Wednesdays "Wedding Wednesdays." Everyone around us seems to be getting engaged, taking the plunge, etc--I know many fabulous, and seriously different, young women getting into marriage planning mode, Katie, Laura, and Mem being just a few, who might just appreciate what I have to add on the topic of weddings...then again maybe they won't. It's Wedding Wednesday anyway.

Yesterday, during our walk, Olivia and I were discussing one of our favorite topics-- "why things cost so much," and we were focused on weddings. "Why can't brides just choose a dress from the floor at Bloomies? Why does it have to be an awful "Bride's Maid Dress" from the Bridal Collection?" I quipped.

"Yea," Olivia agreed, "Why, can't it just be like, from Aqua?" And then I felt a tremendous amount of pride, and thought maybe I should email Julia Allison, because I know that's where my vintage loving sister found out about Aqua.

And why can't a bride's maid be dressed in Aqua? They are great-- I will concede, you cannot get a dress to match the exact shade of the Bride's eye shadow, or the center flower in her bouquet, or the band around the edge of the salad plate--but the colors they offer are bold, beautiful and often a black and/or a navy, which is a fantastic neutral.

This Aqua Belted Party Dress can be bought for well under $200, it's classy, classic and there's nothing I love more than a short dress for a black tie event. It's the avant garde part of me, I suppose.
If you're not a boundary pusher like myself, and are planning a fancy wedding, this Aqua Long Chiffon One Shoulder Dress fits the bill. The colors offered are limited, but lovely. The cut is surprisingly flattering for many body types, a pregnant bride's maid would have the support of the one shoulder and the advantage of the empire waist. A Twiggy shaped maid of honor would enjoy the flounce and bounce of the chiffon. A bride could even score the white version for a wedding dress solution under $300.

So, Aqua, I'll have my eye on you. I'll be coming for you, for your pretty patterns, your sweet solids, your beautiful belted looks and your lovely event ensembles. Watch out.

Lovely British Finds

G'day, Lovelies! Sometimes at school I need a mental break (remember, how I kick my boots off on my day off from lunch?) and with the impending holidays, I've been doing some holiday internet-window browser shopping during this little mid-day break. Often my mental break at school comes in the form of one of my favorite blogs, Glamour's Smitten; I love Smitten, it's a blog all about love, relationships, and the sweet stuff in life. The other day Joanna Goddard (hello, girl crush) posted about this beautiful British store called Emma Bridgewater. I finally had time to browse their items, and wow, what amazing gift ideas, not only for the upcoming holidays, but for birthdays, Mother's Day, graduations, and much more. Here's a roundup of some of my favorite items from the Lovely Emma Bridgewater:

  • I love, love, love their line of half-pint pitchers (and I know someone else who would also...)! They would make a perfect little present for your favorite friend; I especially love the British Birds design, which features hand-drawn delicate images of birds; the Polka Dot design is so playful and lovely! What a great little pitcher to put on the shelf in the kitchen, or a perfect accessory for a guest bedroom.
  • I've been on an endless quest for the perfect pasta bowl (no thanks to you, Ikea), and while these bowls are a little pricey, they are lovely and would make a gorgeous and unique statement in your kitchen. The White Toast Pasta Bowl is inscribed with the phrase "Linguine with Garlic and Oil" in white, to match the bowl. Simple, classy, but one-of-a-kind! And The Black Toast Pasta Bowl is inscribed in black with the phrase "Pomodoro & Basicilo." What great presents for new homeowners or college students setting up their dorm rooms.
  • How lovely is this Pink Hearts Bowl? As the description says,"It may be pretty but it's very tough. Great for tea parties in the garden, birthday teas and picnics." How adorable would this be for a Sunday morning brunch with the girls?
  • Remember to check out their Factory Shop where pieces of work with minor infractions or variations in the patterns make the prices of the item low, low, low! Go buy yourself a little "It's October" gift today!
